Industry News [Week of September 28]

This is the regular weekly post where I share updates about things happening in gaming, machine learning, audio, or frankly anything that catches my eye and seems relevant to share or discuss here. Let’s hop right in!

Following Unity’s recent IPO, Roblox is now rumored to be looking at going public as well, though they haven’t chosen between an IPO and direct listing yet. The article suggests that they are looking at something on the order of an $8b valuation, but given the heat in gaming right now and the general success of Roblox, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it come through a fair deal higher. (Seems I’m not the first or only person to suspect this, either.)

An ad campaign uses visual deepfakes + actors with plausible accents to create videos of Putin and other dictators discussing the state of our democracy, to spur people to action. According to this article, the ad was set to air on Fox, CNN, and MSNBC but was pulled at the last moment. An interesting story to watch; while I appreciate that the ad creators are intending this as a way to increase awareness (which is definitely a public good), I worry that permitting these kinds of impersonations will create a slippery slope, so am unsure where exactly I’d land myself here.

That’s all for this week! As always, any thoughts or feedback are welcome. Stay safe, healthy, and sane, all!
